Book Review - The Torch and the Sword

By: Craig Stockings (810.6/35723)
Publisher: UNSW Press ISBN: 978-0-868408-385

Since 1860s hundreds of thousands of school-aged Australian children have undergone military and youth development training as part of various cadet schemes. With more than 17,000 cadets currently serving in over 200 units across Australia, the army cadet movement has become a significant institution with enduring social implications. However, the record of this movement is small, scattered and insufficient, lacking any attempt to tell their story across both time and space in a single narrative of 140 years. This book closes the gap by presenting previously untold history of the army cadet movement in Australia form 1866 to 2006.

Craig Stockings traces the four fundamental forces that have shaped the form and character of the movement from its beginning: the army, the education sector, social attitudes, and finance. It also highlights the importance of the movement in the military and educational heritage of the nation.
