Australia's senior military Scottish complement is "A" Company and the Pipes and Drums of the 17th Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment.
On 5 November 1885 the New South Wales Scottish Rifles was raised complete with Pipes and Drums as a fully volunteer militia force and in 1908 an affiliation was officially established with the 42nd (Black Watch) Royal Highland Regiment.
In 1935 "The Scottish" was reformed and renamed as the 30th Infantry Battalion of the New South Wales Scottish Regiment. The 30th maintained the previous high standard till 1960 when, due to military reorganisation, it and other famous regiments were amalgamated and re-formed into the 2nd Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment.
The descendant Scottish complement became the Pipes and Drums and "A" (Scottish) Company with the Black Watch kilt being retained. The unit was further re-formed in 1965 and is subsequently the 17th Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment.
Scarlet and Tartan has been written to commemorate the centenary of the New South Wales Scottish Rifles and successor regiments.
