Book Review - G-for-George - A Memorial to RAAF Bomber Crews 1939-45 460 Squadron RAAF

By: Michael V. Nelemes & Ian Jenkins (950/35725)
Publisher: Banner Books ISBN: 1-875593-21-7

Nazi Germany had conquered all Western Europe by July 1940, and the only means by which the war could be carried to the heart of the Nazi regime was by bombing.

Young men from all the Dominions and territories of the British Commonwealth, able to meet the high physical and mental standards required, volunteered for air force service in their tens of thousands. After long months of training, as pilots, navigators, bomb-aimers, engineers, wireless-operators and air gunners, thousands of these men arrived on bomber stations to take part in the dangerous night bombing campaign against targets in Germany and occupied Europe. Less than one-quarter would survive a tour of operations.

3,500 RAAF men died while operating with RAF Bomber Command. 460 Squadron RAAF alone lost 1,018 men, and 200 aircraft in three years.

Lancaster 'G-for-George' flew 90 bombing operations with a number of different crews of 460 Squadron. It is an exhibit at the Australian War Memorial, but is itself a Memorial to the Australians in the RAF and RAAF members who lost their lives in bombing operations over Europe 1939-45.

The book details the wartime experiences of 'G-for-George' and the men who flew it and who maintained it, as well as the flight to Australia, the War Bond flights and its installation inside the Australian War Memorial.
