Should any of the younger generation of normal English boys wonder what their reactions would be to continuous front line service for nearly four years of modern war, they could find no better guide than these letters. The letters show faithfully all the stages of development of an ingenuous subaltern, the typical public schoolboy of 1914, into the war-hardened veteran of 1918. Those of the older generation who are still interested in war books will find that this record will revive many of their own experiences and emotions, in addition to many fresh aspects with which they are perhaps unacquainted.
