Who Defends Rome?

Melton S. Davis (587/35768)
Publisher: Allen & Unwin ISBN: 0-04-945012-3

On July 24, 1943, the Italian Grand Council virtually voted Mussolini out of office, and from the following day until September 8th, when German troops occupied Rome, Italy suffered increasing chaos and confusion. It is this harrowing period that Melton Davis chronicles in Who Defends Rome?

Double-dealing, treachery, vindictiveness, cowardliness, contradictory orders are the hallmarks of this time, and the protagonists include Mussolini, Hitler, Eisenhower, Maxwell Taylor, the Italian King, Churchill, Badoglio (president of the interim government). It was then that Italy arranged a virtually meaningless armistice with the Allies, the terms of which were never clear to anyone.

Melton S Davis reconstructs these days with riveting thoroughness and using new evidence not previously available. The pace, parading of unbelievable events, illogical diplomacy, will remind readers of The Last Battle, Is Paris Burning? And, for reckless and tragic eccentricity, The reason Why.

Melton S Davis is a correspondent and journalist now living in Rome. His previous books include The Voluptuaries, a novel, and All Rome Trembled.
