Book Review - Voices from the Fortress

By: Paul Rea (580.3/35722)
Publisher: ABC Books ISBN: 978-0-73332-095-8

Paul Rea uncovered the extraordinary story of an Australian ex-prisoner of war who had been illegally thrown into a Nazi concentration camp called the Small Fortress of Terezin in Czechoslovakia, known as the ‘Living Grave’. This soldier was stripped of any protection offered by his nation and military status and was punished for doing no more than his duty: Escaping from a POW camp.

An investigation tracked down more than a dozen Australian and New Zealand veterans who broke a long silence to speak about their horrendous ordeals. Their British counterparts received Nazi war crime compensation, yet the ANZACs met years of denial by their governments and military authorities. ‘You were never in Terezin,’ they were told. “it’s all in your mind.’

Voices from the Fortress tells the survivors’ stories of escape and daring, inhuman treatment at the hands of the Gestapo and their long fight for recognition at home.
