The Broken Swastika

By: Willie Trebich (581.3/35853)
Publisher: Leo Cooper London
(From the John Laffin Library)

Few men can claim to a more extraordinary military career than Willy Trebich. At the outbreak of the Second World War he belonged both to the HAC and to the Hitler Youth.

Nurtured in the international society of the Cote d’Azur, in 1939 he was working as a stockbroker in the City. To please his boss he had joined the HAC but his heart was with the Hitler Jugend with whom he spent every moment of his holidays.

The reader will discover by what twists of fate it fell out that Willy eventually served in the RHA and not in the German Army. The decision was made but the crisis was far from over. He was captured in North Africa by his former Nazis friends. He escaped and was recaptured no less than six times-eventually being sent to the concentration camp at Regensburg, but each time he knew that he was escaping as much from his fellow-prisoners as from the enemy.

Not only is this a fantastic adventure story, it is also a deeply moving account of a man haunted by his past, desperately trying to lay the ghost of his own conscience.
