Red Baron- The life and Death of an Ace

By: Peter Kilduff (940/35754)
Publisher: D&C ISBN: 980-0-7153-2809-5

During World War I, Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen was renowned amongst Allied airmen as the feared Red Baron, after he famously painted his planes red, making himself instantly recognizable in the air. His gallantry and boldness as a battle commander not only won him trust and respect from those around him, but also led to him being used as a propaganda icon by the various governments during the war.

On April 21st 1918, Richthofen was shot down near the Somme and died aged 25. His outstanding contribution to the war secured him a distinguished reputation in life, but even in death, he was an important figure in cultivating and reinforcing public support for the war among the German people.

In Red Baron: The life and Death of an Ace, Richthofen expert Peter Kilduff examines the life and times of the Red Baron: his comrades and enemies, the planes he flew, the battles he fought in, the political climate that caused his eventual disenchantment and the controversial circumstances of his death.

Drawing on new material from former East German state archives and making fresh insights into existing sources, including Richthofenís little-seen medical records, Reb Baron: The Life and Death of an Ace is a compelling portrait of a fascinating man and is endorsed by the surviving Richthofen family.
