One More River – The Rhine Crossings of 1945

By: Peter Allen (583/35857)
Publisher: Billing & Sons Ltd ISBN: 0460043781

Most accounts of the Second World War in north-west Europe deal at length with the final German offensive, the Battle of the Ardennes. In reality, the battle for the Rhineland in March 1945 by American, British and Canadian troops, saw some of the most desperately fought campaigns of all.

In this reappraisal of those momentous months at the end of the war, Peter Allen does full justice to the drama of such events as the US First Army’s attack on the Roe dams, the British attack through the Reichswald, the magnificent contribution of the Canadian army, the capture of the bridge at Remagen, Patton’s spectacular drive to the Rhine and his famous night time crossing, and the arrival of the Airbone Division to link up with the Allied ground forces across the Rhine. In addition, the tension between the senior Allied commanders – Montgomery, Bradley, Patton and Eisenhower in particular – looms large in the story. The frequent clashes of personality could very nearly have wrecked the entire operation.

Drawing on numerous first-hand accounts and archival material Peter Allen has pieced together the most detailed and important study yet published of the closing stages of the war in Europe.
