One Airmanís War Ė Aircraft Mechanic Joe Bullís Personal Diaries 1916-1919

Ed: Mark Lax (940/35741)
Publisher: Banner Books ISBN: 978-1-875593-16-0

Joe Bull, from Victoria, was an Aircraft Mechanic with 1 Squadron Australian Flying Corps 1916-19. Joe kept an extremely detailed diary of squadron events and his personal activities. Importantly, he bought a camera in Cairo and complemented the diary with 600 personal photos, creating a unique record of what it was like to serve in 1 Squadron. Much later, his diary was fund to contain important daily details not recorded in the official squadron diary.

Joe Bull returned to Australia and led a full life. After his death, his family contacted the RAAF to ask if there was any interest in the diary and photos. Mark Lax, a serving RAAF officer undertook the task of combining the diary and official records, plus information from the German side. What has evolved is a clear look back through eight decades to the time of 1 Squadron in 1916 Ė the personnel, the aircraft, the locations, clashes with the enemy, successes, the losses: a truly unique record of Australiaís first airmen at war, illustrated with the best 100 of Joe Bullís photos.`
