Darkness over Germany

By: E. Amy Buller (432.1/35985)
Publisher: Longmans, Green and Co. ISBN: 12325

Many reasons, historical, economic, political, have been given for the German aggression; none of them by itself is adequate. Miss Buller believes that underlying all of them is a deeper reason for the Nazi Revolution and that it was a profound mental and spiritual crisis in the German nation which gave Hitler a stranglehold on the German race.

In this book the Author, who knew Germany intimately between the two wars, allows the Germans to speak for themselves. Men and women in the Church, both Catholic and Protestant, the professions and some sections of the Army tell their stories; although in opposition to Nazi teaching, they remained at their posts in the mistaken and tragic belief the thus they could best serve Germany and in the end oppose or replace the Nazis.

These people, about whom little is known, are the main hope for the rebuilding of a saner Germany.

The second part of the book is concerned with German Youth and its devotion to Hitler. We must face the fact that, however false the Nazi teaching, it was an answer to certain spiritual necessities of which German Youth had been made collectively aware. Unless we understand why they were enslaved we cannot begin to formulate a remedy.
